Peace in the Storm

When storms threaten, whether in the sky or in our hearts, it’s easy to feel small against the roar of uncertainty and it makes me ponder in my heart what sets Davide a part from us when he stood before Goliath. As my home country, Jamaica is now experiencing a Category 5 hurricane, Melissa is her name, I’m reminded that true peace isn’t the absence of trouble, but the presence of God in the midst of it. So, though, we have never experienced such a catastrophic hurricane make landfall on our home land, it is imperative that we hold fast to out confession of faith.

“Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.” Hebrews 11:1 NIV

Fear may knock, but faith decides who and what stays.
In moments like these, preparation is wise, but prayer is powerful. Psalm 46:1 reminds us, “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.” No matter how strong the winds, His Word anchors us. Speak peace over your home. Pray protection over your loved ones. Remind your children that even when the world feels shaky, God remains steady.

Faith does not replace wisdom — it strengthens it. And preparation is stewardship. Take time to:

As a pharmacist and disability-inclusive advocate, I’ve seen how storms can amplify challenges for families with special needs or chronic illness. Create a plan for medication storage, sensory comfort, and emergency communication. Inclusion matters, especially in emergencies. Care-givers please train someone to take care of your loved ones, yes, it is a difficult conversation but a necessary one.

The Caribbean spirit is one of resilience — we rise together. And that has proven time and time again, from the days indigenous people, to the slavery and post-independence.
When we share supplies, lend helping hands, or simply check in with a neighbor, we become the calm in someone else’s storm. Compassion is contagious; let it spread faster than fear.

Let’s declare together:

“Peace be still.”
“No weapon formed against us shall prosper.”
“The God who protected us before will protect us again.”

We may not control the storm, but we can command our response. As the winds rage, hold fast to gratitude, hope, and community. When the skies clear and they will, let our hearts be filled with praise. Hallelujah! To the most high God, the I am that I am, the author and finisher of our faith.

Even as we prepare for life’s storms, I’m reminded that every season is an opportunity to embrace possibility. My book, Embracing Possibilities: Nurturing Children with Special Needs, was written to encourage and equip parents walking a unique journey with their child. For little ones, Jungle Talent Jamboree offers a joyful way to celebrate their uniqueness and discover that being different is what makes them special. And if you or your family are seeking support, coaching, or training to navigate neurodivergence, disability, or special needs with confidence and grace… I’d love to connect with you.
