The Power of Presence

“Be still, and know that I am God.” Psalm 46:10

In a world that glorifies busyness, God calls us to be still. Psalm 46:10 is a powerful reminder that His presence is enough. As parents, we sometimes feel pressure to do more, fix more, and be more. But sometimes, the greatest gift we can give our children is simply our presence.

Children especially those with neurodivergence (autism, ADHD, dyslexia, etc.), disabilities, or special needs, thrive on connection. Being present is more important than having everything perfect, after all we don’t live in a perfect world. Being present means truly listening, making eye contact, and offering comfort without rushing to fix everything.

Maya Angelou said “People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” This includes our children, they willremember how we made them feel more than what we did for them. It drives home the point that my child doesn’t need me to be a superhero; they need me to be present.

Being a good parent doesn’t mean constant action – finding therapies, fixing challenges, and making progress. My children have taught me that sometimes, they just want me to sit with them, to be still, and to simply be. Slowing down and embracing the power of presence, has deepen the bond between us.

Ways to practice being present

  • Put Away Distractions – Set a timer for 10 minutes today and give your child undivided attention (no phone, no multitasking).
  • Be Still with God – Spend 5 minutes in silence, just resting in His presence.
  • Practice Active Listening – Ask your child about their day and truly listen without rushing to respond.
